Registration and Verification
There is a real benefit from all this registration and verification, however. The same techniques that are used to make sure that you do your part to help pay for Bill's house (I figure I've paid for at least a doorknob or so) are also used to make sure that your software patches and updates are current. Windows Update really works and it's getting better every day. When the installation asks you to check Windows Update for new files, it's a good idea to do it. The system you save may be your own!

The first part of Chapter 1 up to about page 14 is a (really good) introduction to the parts of Visual Studio from a VB point of view. (Visual Studio does have a 'point of view'. See step 4 on page 7 on updating your personal Profile.)

The text encourages you to 'play around' with all the tools, windows, and options in Visual Studio and that's a good idea too! Using VS.NET effectively happens when you know how all the parts work. But there is a hidden risk here, too. VS.NET is so configurable that you can get it messed up to the point that you have a hard time doing things. Rather than waste time moving windows "back to normal" by hand, use the handy Reset Window Layout button. You'll find it under Tools > Options in the Environment, General section.
